The Best Paper Shredders for Home Use In 2021

Paper shredding is one of the most important defenses you have for preventing identity theft originating from the physical theft of sensitive papers in the house that contain personal data on them. In my home I’ve experimented with a lot of different paper shredders to try and find the best shredder for our office.

Personally I value the following in a paper shredder:

shredding speed
the ability to cut thick stacks at once
ease of maintenance

I also like my shredders to be relatively quiet as well because excessive noise is annoying for everyone in my opinion. Autofeed is also nice but the majority of homeowners and even small business owners don’t regularly have stacks of hundreds of papers to shred at once very often so this isn’t a feature I care about a long in my own home office.

I have personally tried and tested a bunch of them, (not all) but a lot, and I’ve narrowed my favorites down for review on this page for your convenience.

Here is my list of the best paper shredders for home use as of 2021. These work well for basic paper, junk mail, credit card, and CD shredding.

The Best Paper Shredders of 2021 For Home & Office Use (Not Commercial)

Boxis AF70 Micro-Cut Shredder w/ Autofeed – This shredder is an affordable high-capacity shredder that can handle large stacks at once. Not only does it shred papers but it shreds them into really tiny pieces all for a reasonable price that many families and small businesses can afford.

Fellowes Powershred 99CI Cross-Cut Shredder (Heavy Duty) – This shredder is getting a touch expensive for home use but it’s one of the best non-commercial options available for shredders that simply won’t jam or overheat. This shredder can handle a lot of paper at once and because it only cross cuts it is powerful enough to get through just about any thing without stalling.

Bonsaii 4S30 P-5 High-Security 10-Sheet Micro-Cut Commercial Shredder – This is an excellent shredder for the home because it’s small but very robust. It will only take up to 10-sheets at a time but it microcuts them as well as cards, cds, and things like staples and paper clips too all without having jamming or overheating problems. In fact this shredder is touted to be able to run for 4-hours straight although I’ve not tested it up to that length myself.

Aurora AS890C 8-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder – This shredder has made my best list because it is the best performing entry level shredder I’ve tested. It’s nearly the cheapest option you can buy anywhere but if you have only basic shredding needs, junk mail every few days or so, then this 8-sheet version will likely meet your needs just fine without giving you problems and without costing you very much money either.

Wolverine SD9113 18-Sheet P-4 Shredder – This shredder makes my top 5 list because it has a high capacity collection bin that won’t have to be emptied as often as some of the others but mainly because it is very very quiet. I’ve tested this shredder at decibels under 60! Not only does this shredder work without making much noise but it’s also a micro-cut shredder that can power through thick material like unopened junk mail at once. It won’t even cost you a lot either as it’s half the price of a couple other shredders on this list.

Obviously There Are Lots Of Other Good Options

Now there are many other great options out there from some of the other brands and I’ll go into many of them in detail down below. For the first part of this article I think it’s important to show my favorite shredders that will be perfect fits for most people.

If you are looking for a small footprint, huge capacity, or a mega-sized autofeed, or some other special type of cut style then read on.

Price points can vary quite a bit too. If you want a shredder under $50 then the best low cost shredders will be different than people looking to spend less than $300 on a shredder… and bigger businesses may be willing to spend up to $2000 on a commercial size shredder which will of course require a different list of products.

I don’t specialize in commercial size products however so keep that in mind while browsing this page.
