DIY Document Destruction - Brian Shreds

In any home owning and regularly using a quality paper shredder is one of the smartest things you can do to protect your physical personal information from theft or loss.

Personally I’ve used professional shredding from local businesses, I’ve tried home document destruction services and found them to be overkill for my smaller scale needs, in the end I’ve found that owning top of the line residential paper shredders are the way to go.

Cheaper shredders are usually louder, slower, have to be emptied more often, are messier to empty, and their serviceable life is shorter. Many of them overheat, can’t handle thick paper or cards, and I’ve even found a few that seemed dangerous for little fingers.

On this site I try to answer and inform my readers on all things related to paper shredding and to the protection of your personal information in and around the home.

For the most part this site should be helpful to anyone… even those that run small businesses or mid-sized offices, not just the home office worker or stay-at-home mom.

Before we start looking at individual shredders I want to first talk about shredder styles and what makes some shredders more expensive (or better) than other.

Most People Ask One or More of These Frequently Asked Questions Before Buying A Paper Shredder For The Home Office

Cross Cut, Strip, Confetti, Micro Cut, & Diamond Cut Shredders: What’s The Difference Anyway?

In this full length article I explain the main differences between these shredder styles, show you what they look like, and explain which style is best for different types of people with varying budgets. This is one of the first things you should pay attention to when choosing a shredder to buy.

Quiet vs Fast Paper Shredders: Which Is The Best Feature?

In my home I love things that make as little noise as possible. I use battery powered lawn mowers, buy my kids toys that don’t make unnecessary sounds, I run kitchen appliances that are whisper silent on purpose. In the office a shredder can be an annoying sound if you aren’t using it so should you opt for a quiet shredder even if it is a bit slow? Here’s my take.

Which Paper Shredder Do I Recommend?

My entire line of work has to do with testing products out, teaching people how things work, and answering direct questions from my followers online. I don’t just curate the web and spew non-helpful information out to readers hoping to make a sale. I want to help you out before anything else. That’s why I actually buy and own the products I talk about and review.

Over on the Brian Shreds YouTube channel you can see a running list of all the paper shredding experiments I undertake as well as individual product reviews and head-to-head comparisons of various shredders from both ends of the pricing spectrum.

Here on this site I don’t try to sell you on any particular product but instead I try to equip you with the information you need to decide which products are right for you in your own life.

I do have a post here on the site where I outline all of the shredders I’ve tested, purchased, or researched in some other way. If you’d like to see my condensed thoughts on then see this post on the site on the best paper shredders of 2021.

I am also planning on developing this site in the future to help you decide how to protect the papers you keep in the home or office – you know, the papers you don’t decide to shred but need to keep safe.

A Word About Me… The Author & Owner of Brian Shreds

I like to call myself a product educationalist. I’m like the old timey hardware store guy that could answer every question you ever had about whatever project you were working on in the home.

I do not care to point you in the wrong direction or give you unhelpful information. I run a handful of websites on other topics that are important to me in my own personal life. What I do would be classified as content marketing but I see it as more than that – I help people make decisions in various aspects of their lives and I take pride in that.

I genuinely hope that you’ll head over to my full bio here on the site to learn more about me and what I do and to connect with me online. Alternatively you can see this about page to get an overview of this website and the Brian Shreds brand. Thanks!
